Ah, yes, second floors. I remember those... We don't have too many of
those in Florida. Good suggestion, though.

The other thing is that my cats are getting up in years, and even
though they can still jump barriers, or onto counters, etc., they
aren't as spry (or as light) as they once were and don't enjoy it too
much.

I would be interested to hear if it IS a problem, but we don't seem to
have any trouble with it. The ferrets even occasionally use the cats'
litter box.

They most definitely can share parasites if one catches them, though -
ear mites, scabies, coccidia, etc.

Heh, heh. I solved this one by following your suggestion and putting
the ferret food on the second floor....of the cage. We found that if
we put it on the entry floor, the cat will climb into the cage to eat
it! (We leave the cages open.) With a full second floor, she can't
get to the food anymore.
