Subject: Re: 3 Year Rabies Vaccine?????

Hi Katherine,
Imrab-3 is the only rabies vaccine currently approved
for ferrets! It is approved as a yearly vaccine in ferrets,
and as a once every 3 years for dogs and cats. It is
also approved for use in horses, sheep, and cattle.
Imrab 3 is made by Merial, the new name after
Rhone Merieux merged with Merck.
Rabvac 3 is a totally different vaccine for dogs, cats,
and horses. It is made by Ft Dodge (and by Solvay
before them). It is not approved for use in ferrets.
You might want to double check with your vet as to
which vaccine was used. They probably use Rabvac 3 for
dogs and cats, and Imrab 3 for the ferrets. Hopefully that
is why you received conflicting answers about the vaccine
(Merck on the certificate but Rabvac by the receptionist).
Hope that helps,
Jerry Murray, DVM
PS In Texas we have the 1 year law and are required to use
a 3 year vaccine because of the high number of rabies
cases. Yes, rabies cases in dogs, cats, and wildlife.
