Subject: Re: Constant groin licking?&how to use a glucose test on
thick skin

Hi Kat,

I don't have any ideas about the groin licking - weird! Hopefully
someone else has ideas.

I don't know which glucometer you have, but I have had great luck
with the Freestyle by Therasense. It only needs a small drop of
blood - 0.3 microliters. I'm not aware of any other glucometer that
will work with such a small sample. However, I've never been able to
get even that much blood by lancing their skin - their skin just
doesn't seem to bleed like ours. I've only been able to get it to
work by lancing a paw pad, and because usually only a tiny
bit of blood comes up by doing that, I only anticipate success
with the Freestyle, at least until another one that takes such a
tiny sample comes onto the market.

The good news is that if your ferret can be distracted with a treat
like Ferretone, it is pretty much completely stress-free, and quite
fast and easy once you are used to it.

Anyway, I have recently started up an illustrated web page giving
step-by-step directions on what works for me and my fuzzies. It's at:

I want to re-take pictures at some point in the future, because I
know the current ones are a bit blurry. But they give some idea...

Good luck,
