Hello Lynn,
It sounds as if you have a very sick ferret on
your hands! Since he has insulinoma wouldn't it be
best not to stress him out so much at this time and
try to gain his confidence back before 'punishing' him
with the flagyl?
Will he take some Ensure with his baby food, most
ferrets seem to like the sweetness and in this way he
will be getting some needed fluids too! I usually put
1 teaspoon of Ensure with 4 teasoons of A/D+BABYFOOD
and in a small amount I put the pred., you need to get
this into him! If he still has diarrhea then give him
electrolyes also, help with the fluids!
Once you get him eating and drinking again then
you can try 'pilling' him as Danee suggested, this
would be the fastest and most tasteless method! Or you
can crush the pill in the 'minutest' amount of water
and shoot it behind the canine, across the mouth NOT
DOWN THE THROAT and then follow quickly with something
sweet! In this way the bitterness is kept to the
minimum! All my ferrets love 'chicken puree' and so I
just follow the flagyl with it and it works, it has to
be something that they like!
Also if he needs Pepto or Amoxy you can always
mix them in a little of the food, once he realizes
that it is something good to eat and that he is not
being poisoned, poor little thing!!! Until he is doing
better you may need to feed him about every 3-4 hours,
about 20-25ccs of Ensure/chicken, this will help him
gain weight, as well as being a bland food that will
not irritate his stomach, that by now may be
developing ulcers, because of the stress and the
pred.! If this is the case, then how about asking your
vet for some carafate to give him, to help coat his
stomach about 45 mins before you give his meds---Angela
