Subject: Re: update on Eddie

On 6-2-02 I posted a plea (#13470) for my little
Eddie. I want to
update
all the wonderful people who reached out to help. The
sad ending is
that
Eddie died on 6-5-02 following surgery.

Summary: on 5-11-02 Eddie had a sudden onset of hind
end weakness
accompanied by florescent green and watery diarrhea
with lethargy.
Over the
next 3 weeks he lost nearly a pound. He was treated
initially for a
urinary
tract infection and then over the course of time with
Lactulose and
Flagyl.
ADV was negative.

On Monday 6-3-02, another rush trip to the vet
revealed that his liver
enzymes were back to normal, but he was now
dehydrated. He was admitted
for
IV fluids and given an injection of Dexamethasone.

By Wednesday, 6-5-02, he had stabilized, no longer
required IV fluids,
and
was munching happily on kibble. He was deemed a
suitable surgical
candidate
for biopsies of the stomach and intestine. During
surgery 2 large
adrenals
were removed--the left by excision and the right--very
large--by
cryosurgery
(he had NO hair loss). One large mass was removed
from the pancreas
(his
glucose--all 3 of them over a 3-week period--both
fasting and otherwise
had
been normal). Although the stomach and intestines
looked fine,
biopsies
were taken. The spleen and liver looked good.

Eddie made it through surgery fine, but that afternoon
took a sudden
turn
for the worse. He was resuscitated and put on a
ventilator. But he
did not
make it.

In memory of Eddie, a roly-poly, happy-go-lucky lover:
My Eddie was sensitive, determined and expressive. As
a baby, his
unselfish
ways quickly gained my respect and admiration. His
persistent and
gentle
kindness won the friendship of more than one nasty
ferret.

He sought to please and lived for praise. He loved
the words "good
boy" and
would do ANYTHING to hear those words. When the other
ferrets were
being
praised, "good girl," he appeared in an instant. Girl
or Boy--it
didn't
matter--as long as it was preceded by "good."

His life's mission was to promote peace. He made his
rounds
daily--checking
on all the other ferrets in the house. When he
determined that they
were
all happy, he came to me, rising on his hind legs, one
hand on my leg
for
support, the other pawing at mid air. Our eyes would
lock and my heart
would soar as I picked him up. "Eddie you're a good,
good boy," I
praised
as he nosed my hair and ears, kissed my face and
snuggled in for a back
rub.

I miss him terribly but will never forget what he
taught me: Love will
always win.

For all of those who sent their help and love my
way--Betty, Tansy,
Lisa,
Erin, Trish, Heather, Tamara, Mary, Roger V.,
sukieferret, and his
vets--(I
hope I didn't miss anyone)--I thank you from the
bottom of my heart.
