Subject: UPDATE - Re: Please help - lethargy, enlarged spleen,
adrenal on lupron

Nyla just got home this morning from the hospital where she had her
spleen removed yesterday. The spleen had indeed ruptured in two
spots. My vet said that it had occured a few days before the surgery,
because the spots were clotted, but as soon as they (I have two vets
that work together) touched them they began to bleed. Her lethargy
was due to her low blood count from the internal bleeding. We had one
of our other ferrets tranfuse for her. We still do not know why the
spleen became so big, but it is being sent out for biopsy to check
for Lymphoma. She is all skin and bones now compared to the way she
looked prior to the surgery. My vet said that we caught this in time
because if she had been playing and jumped off of something like the
couch she could have ruptured it further almost surly causing her to
die from internal bleeding since her blood count was so low already.

I wanted to thank all of you who responded to my posts. I had already
come to the conclusion that removal of the spleen was necessary, but
all the info that was sent to me backed that up. My vet actually
suggested the removal before I could tell her that was what I wanted,
so we were all on the same page.

Thanks for the support,
Stephanie
