Subject: Re: Yikes! Help with spleen question

Hi Carol,

I just went through this! Talk to your vet about spleen removal. My
girl Nyla just got back from the hospital this morning after having
her spleen removed yesterday. It had ruptured in two places a few
days before her surgery. They saw during gross examination that the
rupture spots had clotted, but as soon as they touched them they
began bleeding. My vet told me if we had waited any longer she might
have died because all she needed to do was to jump from the couch and
she could have ruptured it further causing major internal bleeding.
He didn't have the total weight of the spleen right in front of him
when we were talking, but he motioned with his hands how large it was
and it was as big as she was. It was all folded and curved around in
her tummy. My reason for taking her to the vet to begin with was she
was very lethargic and just looked uncomfortable. Also her tummy was
very tight and hard.

If he is showing any signs of lethargy you can have blood drawn to
see if he is enemic (Nyla was) which might indicate a rupture. A
rupture can be fatal. I'm not trying to scare you, but if you are
already aware of an grossly enlarged spleen, then talk further about
causes (possible infection which would show a high white blood cell
count in a CBC) and possible removal.

I can visibly see how much better Nyla feels now. It's amazing.I wish
you all the best.
