Subject: Treatment plan change for insulinoma?
Please forgive me for not being up to date with this. I have 4
ferrets with insulinoma and this is a new one for me. My
understanding regarding their care is that I was to AVOID sugar
because it was believed the sugar could cause changes that might
result in diabetes.
Last week my 14.5 oz 4 yr 10 mo old ferret went in for an
adrenalectomy. It turned out to be bilateral (left was resected,
right was cryoed) and she was found to have a pancreas riddled with
disease. They said there was so much and so dispersed that they would
not remove any of it. Her glucose levels have always been good -
never below 86 - and this was a surprise. I was told she could have
anything she wants to eat, especially sugary treats to keep the
glucose level up.
She is on Dexamethasone bid x 7 days, then daily for 7 days and the
Florinef bid x 3 wks, then daily x 3 wks. (I am sorry I don't know
the doses on these because I didn't realize until now that the
strength is not listed on the bottles. One is a pink tablet and she
gets half, the other is orange and she gets a fourth.) All meds are
discontinued after that.
Is this common? Is there new stuff out there that I have missed? I
tried to do an archive search, but it was difficult to wade through.
If you would prefer to email me privately, that is okay, too. Thanks
for the help.
