Subject: Re: Jill killing kits

The only time I have seen a good mother attack older
kits is if she is sick (unusual) or the kits are sick
and it's not yet obvious- this is the usual case.
I believe it is because they do not smell right to the
Jill.

2 week olds can be hand raised, which I have done. I
highly recommend powdered goat's milk. It's relatively
easy to obtain and I've raised litters from as young
as one week on it with great success, much better
success than the powdered puppy or kitten formulas.

When they have been rejected like this by the jill
they probably need an antibiotic too. Sometimes when
the kits get better the jill will take the kits back,
though her milk may have dried up by then. Oh, and a
possible cause for the kits to be sick at this age is
mastitis in the jill, so check her teats carefully.
