I'm so glad you wrote this! Firstly, a big smooch and hug. Ok,
mealworms are an awesome source of protien as would be the crickets.
Earthworms are a danger, they do indeed carry stuff around in them
Consider that the worm eats his way through the soil. Open one up,
there is your backyard.

To prepare them for human consumption (yes people eat worms) they are
kept for a period of weeks or months (not sure which) in a tub of
slightly moist cornmeal. Eventually the corn meal flushes out the
nastiness. But if the cornmeal is too weight it will grow it's own
nastiness.

Pain in the butt when you consider meal worms are cheap, safe and have
a much nicer crunch :)
