An acquaintance of mine had to use this approach when her furry
swallowed an apricot stone. Only a few ferret-savvy vets in this
country, and she was at the opposite end of the country; arrangements
were underway to get the ferret to a specialist vet if necessary but
as she wasn't acutely ill or totally blocked, the farm vet prescribed
laxatives and IV fluids first. The apricot stone was passed in about
24 hours, and the ferret little the worse for wear. The owner,
though, was a nervous wreck!
Obviously it can work ... depends on the object swallowed, the
ferret, the vet, the owner, etc etc. Whether it's advisable in
circumstances other than ones similar to the above, I can't give an
opinion. I am a human medic, not a vet. one.
