Subject: Vicky :-)

Hi

Vicky really went downhill over night, she had her last meal at midnight, I
managed to get her to eat some Hills A/D. Then I tried to feed again at
1.00 but she didn't want to eat. Next feed was 4.30 but by then she was
completely limp. In half an hour I got about 7cc of the liquid cat diet
down her. She stopped swallowing. She also didn't eat at all at 7.00, she
was just limp and lifeless. Got her to the vets by 9.00 and my vet wasn't
sure what to do, I brought Hobo and Bobby as blood donors but my vet didn't
want to do a blood transfusion until she knew what type of anaemia it was...
She injected some fluid with glucose into the abdomen and told us to leave
Vicky there and if Vicky became more conscious, they would cut a nail and do
a smear on a slide. Well, we went home to feed the ferrets and about an
hour later we got a call from the vets, they did the smear and the blood
looked very thin, they did a blood glucose test which was normal. So they
asked us to come back with the boys and my vet wanted to do the transfusion
because there was nothing to loose. She took 9cc of Hobo and managed to get
it into Vicky, she didn't need to be sedated or anaesthetised, she just lay
there on her back without moving. By the time they brought Vicky to us into
the waiting room, she already had her head up. On the way home she was
looking around, at home she managed to crawl, now, tonight, she's running
around!!! :-))) I gave her a little piece of Zantac, my vet didn't want to
start treating for a stomach ulcer but I'm sure that's what she's got. So I
gave her Zantac and she ate and she's had a few meals of A/D today and has a
good appetite but after about a teaspoon full she stops and grinds her teeth
but no gagging or vomiting. I hope tomorrow I can persuade my vet to try
and treat for an ulcer.

I also bought a bottle of a liquid antacid. It's called Gaviscon, the
ingredients are (per 10ml): 500mg sodium alginate Ph Eur, 267mg sodium
bicarbonate Ph Eur and 160mg calcium carbonate Ph Eur. It also contains
carbomer, methyl and propyl parahydroxybenzoates, sodium saccharin, sodium
hydroxide, erythrosine. Would that be alright to give? How much? Or is it
better if I manage to get some more Zantac down her?

I'm so grateful for this list right now, I was crying when Vicky ran through
the lounge just now, my husband still says I shouldn't get my hopes up too
much but I am, I can't believe how much better she is, I just hope it's not
some anaemia where her body destroys the red blood cells, I hope it all
turns out okay.

From a grateful and happy Ulrike
