Bag Balm is a (sort of) traditional remedy similar to vasaline. You
should be able to buy it at any pharmasy, but many pharmasies keep it
behind the counter -- Grandma says that they do this to keep from having
to answer several hundred "What's this?" questions each day. When I
bought some earlier this year, my pharmasy didn't stock it, but was able
to get it for me by the next day. I bought a largish box of it (it comes
in a green tin) that will last me many years, for about $5.
According to my grandmother, who told me about Bag Balm in the first
place, it was originally developed by dairy farmers who were faced with
the problem of their cows' udders becoming chapped in the winter. Reading
the tin, there's even instructions for how to use it in dairy
farming! I've been using it for dry knees, elbows, & hands, and it's good
to know that, should one of my three ferrets need it, it works for them
too.
