Hi, Jen.

You have it right - the point is not only to simulate (or use!) the
real day period, but to vary it naturally throughout the year. That
helps them know when to put on their summer coats vs. their winter
coats, etc.

I don't know about the rice. I haven't used a rice box, and would be
worried about them eating it, too. Any comments?
