Michele,

Yes, you can suddenly become allergic to your ferrets. Generally, it
takes (from what my allergist has told me) about 6 months to a year
to develop an allergy after your first exposure. There is a blood
test to determine whether you are allergic. I have done the blood
test, and I am allergic. I don't recall exactly the name of
laboratory that conducts this test. Your blood will have to be sent
away, though.

As for your symptoms, I cannot help you there. I do know that
allergies show themselves in a variety of ways. I have a tendency to
get itchy eyes and sneezy. My husband gets itchy skin (without the
bumps). Others may get asthmatic, stuffy sinuses, headaches,
swelling... List goes on... If you do think that you might be
allergic, I suggest going to get a blood test. If you have any
further questions, feel free to email me.
