The problem with Ultrasound is that it does not always show the entire
picture (no pun intended). What is seen during surgery may be very
different from what was seen on Ultrasound. To my understanding, if the
Ferret is showing symptoms the disease is already advanced. In which
case, an experienced vet should be able to spot the affected gland
during surgery even if it was not obvious on Ultrasound. Keep in mind
that the size of the gland is not the only factor to be considered. The
diseased gland can be spotted by color, shape, etc., which can be seen
during surgery though not necessarily on Ultrasound.
I do agree that being subjected to repeated surgeries is not a good
thing. However, based on my experiences I also feel strongly that the
sooner an Adrenal surgery is done the better.
