Subject: yeast infection

Hello...
My ferret had been scratching at his ears, and his earwax turned all dark
and flakey, so I took him into my vet. She did a swab, and it turns out he
has a yeast infection in both ears.
My vet recommended that I wash his ears every other day with a 50/50
solution of vinegar and water, and bring him back in in 2 weeks...
The vinegar seems really painful to him...is there a better cure for this?
He also has thinning hair on his back, but not on his tail, and my vet
ruled out early adrenal...could the thinning hair be related to the yeast
infection?
What else could be causing the thinning hair? I would say it was winter
shedding, only it's been going on for months now.
thanks,
cobalt
