Her body also showed other stick marks in other areas,
but what killed her, according to the autopsy was the
stick to the heart. He stated that taking blood from
the heart is what is sometimes done to lab animals,
and it usually kills them. He also stated that that,
the man should NOT have taken blood that way.

First, I'm very sorry for your loss. This must be
terrible for you. Second, I am not sure why the vet
wanted a blood sample - if he let you know that he was
going to need one, he absolutely should have asked for
your permission before doing a heart stick. But,
doing a heart stick is not totally unheard of for
ferrets. It sounds like he tried to get blood from a
number of other locations, and I have had vets discuss
with me the possibility of having to resort to a heart
stick to get a blood sample when for whatever reason
the sample was very hard to get. I could even see why
he would not have wanted you to have to see him try to
draw blood - some ferrets do make a real fuss about
it.
But the bottom line is that there are known risks of
doing a heart stick, and he should have asked your
permission before doing that.
You have my condolances,
melissa
