I have been using Procrit (similar to Epogen) with my Hershey now for almost a year. Hershey has ADV and because of it, renal failure, which is most likely what is causing the anemia. We started out giving the shots 3 times a week, and after just one week his hematocritjumped from 23 to 54. We backed off to once a week, and then to once everyother week, and he has maintained a healthy level until recently. Although Hershey is now failing, the Procrit allowed him to get a lot more quality time out of his life, and I am very greatful that I used it with him.
Epogen and Procrit were developed to help cancer patients and chemo patients avoid problems with anemia. However, if you are concerned about possible side effects from using it, ask your vet. He would be in the best position to help you make a good decision.
