Subject: Trouble Finding a Qualified Vet

Over the summer we had to have our very first ferret, Tigger, put to sleep. He could no longer walk and no vet could give us a reason or solution. In the last few hours of his life, I held him in a blanket on my stomach, hoping he would show signs of improvement eventually. He never did.

Anyway, during our hunt for a diagnosis, several vets turned us away or sent us elsewhere, saying they weren't qualified to investigate this type of animal. When we finally found a vet who agreed to take a look, he couldn't offer much of a solution other than an attempt at antibiotics and a "good luck". Since we couldn't have Tigger suffer anymore, we decided to have him put down, so that he could finally rest again. I cried for two months.

Now we have 2 new ferrets, bought from a researched breeder. We made careful decisions this time, trying to find the ferrets who would have the best health history. However, if they ever get sick, I'm not sure what we can do to find a vet. The closest recommended one in the state is 370 miles away. I live in Lubbock, TX. Can anyone offer a suggestion or advice as to how I can find a qualified vet for my babies?
