My (non-medical) understanding of septic peritonitis is a spread of bacterial
infection to the peritoneum, or lining of the abdomen. It could happen after
a surgery, if any were done. To treat it, the vet will be looking for the
initial source of the infection and addressing that, and then flushing the
abdomen, sometimes leaving the incision open to drain.
