Subject: Female in heat

I was asked yesterday if I wanted to adopt a female ferret about 1 year old, from a guy
that couldn't have her anymore. I was also told that she was in heat. But I don't know for
how long. So before I say yes or no to committing to a new little ferret I want to ask the
following questions:

Just how long can a female ferret be in heat, before she is starting to get ill from it?
How do I recognize symptoms that she is ill if she has been in heat to long?
Is there any way I can make her well again if she's started to get ill, or is it just a
lost battle by then?
If it's not to late, should I give her the shot to get her out of heat before having her
spayed, so she can get stronger, or should I just go ahead and have her done right away?

Thanks in advance for any replies,
Mariann
p.s. I live in Norway.
