Hi Tiffany,

You might try giving the Carafate ten minutes before each meal (probably a
max of 4 times a day/a minimum of 3), for a whole month, to see if that
helps. Maybe whatever is going on (ulcers, aggravation from the high dose of
Pred, etc.) begins to settle down but doesn't actually heal. Course if the
Pred is causing it, he may always have to be on Carafate. I'd ask his vet
what he/she thinks, in regard to his current health, meds, etc. Also, you'd
want to give the Carafate either 2hrs before or after giving other meds so
as not to interfere with absorption. Maybe in time he could be maintained
with lower and/or less frequent doses of Carafate.

I don't know if Carafate would help with mouth sores. I guess it depends on
whether they're open or not. I'm thinking you'd have to spot apply it with
Q-tips. I think Carafate will only adhere to open sores, but I'm not for
sure on that.

I can't comment about using Plax, but there's a product that's available
from most vet offices. It's called Maxi Guard Oral Cleansing Gel. It's blue
and comes in a clear, plastic bottle. There's a vial of ascorbic acid that
you have to mix with the blue gel. I have a bottle but have yet to try it on
mine. A few people have posted to the FML about it, with mostly good
results. It seems the ferts didn't protest too badly, otherwise I wouldn't
have bought it. Something else you might want to run by the vet, first, just
to be safe.

Good luck. I hope you find something that works.
