Hi Tiffany,
Sorry to hear about Oscar's mutiple problems
(Heart block, insulinoma, adrenal, and urine retention).
It can be hard to control the insulinoma problem with pred
in heart patients. Pred can cause sodium and fluid retention.
Adding Proglycem can help, and it helps lower the amount
of pred needed to control the hypoglycemia.
However the adrenal problem can be treated medically with
Lupron, melatonin, and if the prostate is enlarged Propecia.
I do not know of a reason not to use Lupron and/or melatonin
(neither cause a heart problem or hypoglycemia).
The enlarged bladder that your vets are palpating may actually
be a prostatic cyst. Some of these cysts can be alot
larger than the bladder it self. It would be a good thing to
ultrasound the bladder/prostate area to find out the cause
of the enlarged bladder. And a urine culture would be a good
thing to see if antibiotics are needed also.
Hope that helps,
Jerry Murray, DVM
