I'm from the UK and my ferrets can show an enormous change in their weight, maybe up to 40% difference. One of mine before winter had all this dangly skin from under his chin right down to between his forelegs. As he was a rescue, I didn't understand what this was. Until he piled on the pounds over winter. From what I understand here in the UK ferrets will show a greater seasonal change than the US and can lose condition. This is especially true if your ferrets are kept outside.
It's good to know that you've had him checked out and your vet seems to know what to look for!!!
About feeding him up - is he kibble or meat fed? If meat fed, then try some fattier cuts or duck soup seems to do the trick. I use Arden Grange kitten kibble and I've really notice hte improvement in condition in all my ferrets since starting them on this kibble.
Hope he improves.
