Ok, I finally got around to searching and answered my own first question. Yes, Cosequin is safe (I even asked this once before! Memory is a wonderful thing - wish I had some...), and Rimadyl (carprofen) is a safe NSAID for this application - although "safe" is apparently a relative term when talking about NSAIDs.

I'm still wondering about the mounting and the bare tail, though.
