HI Dan-
I AM NOT a vet-0 but have expreienced a number of illness over the years as
a shelter person.
I am curious - did the vet run a blood panel to check liver values?
Sometimes the appetite will be off if the liver reacts to anesthesia..
the stool you describe sounds like either the result of infection or lower
GI condition. I would strongly urge you top drop off the fecal sample for
testing ASAP- to rule out coccidia or other parasites ( sometimes these
show up with a compromised immune condition). The longer he remains with
this condition the worse the healing process once the illness is identified.

Malabsorption problems we are familiar with are usually the result of
lymphosarcoma of the GI tract or an over feeding of mineral oil
administered for hair balls etc. I think running a fecal check and blood
will reveal the culprit that has your kid dragging a bit.
sending good thoughts
