While sub-cu fluids can be done at home, an IV (whether at home or in
an animal hospital) usually has to be started by the vet. It is not
a simple procedure. Once in place, though, your vet can teach you
how to handle it if the situation warrants and isn't so bad that the
vet wants the ferret under expert watch. When we had Scooter here
with his he had a temporary rise in blood pressure and startled me by
having blood back up into the IV tubing so the drip rate had to be
increased. If you think that the ferret may be bad enough for this
call your vet to discuss having an emergency appointment.
