Patty,
When Pepper got diarrhea and had rapid weight loss, we didn't
realize at the time that it was her liver that was acting up. We became
afraid that we were going to loose her and brought her to our Vet to stay
at the Animal Hospital. After the necessary blood tests were taken to
determine that it was her liver, our Vet put her on Metronidazole at a
rate of 0.3ml. twice a day for ten days, and send her home with us with 5
days remaining on the treatment. We had orders to bring her back 10 days
after the end of treatment for a follow up blood test which came back
normal. I also know that while she was at the Hospital she was given a
shot of Cortisone which the Vet said will sometimes give the liver a
boost on starting to repair itself. He did this because she had all but
quit eating and drinking. I don't know if the Cortisone was given before
they started the Metronidazole treatment or not, but I would think your
Vet should know in what order treatment should occur. Pepper by the way
has been more active now than she has been for the last year, so we have
no idea how long her liver was giving her trouble, and she has regained
most of the weight that she lost. The only problem, if it is a problem,
is that she became quite spoiled while she was at the Hospital. Judy,
myself and her four companions are delighted with her progress. Hope this
helps! Rick
