I did check and I found someone only a ten minute drive away! The squirrel
is now in much better hands than mine. Fortunately, we don't need to worry
about plague where I am. And the rescuer confirmed what you've said, that
they don't carry distemper or rabies. She said I should worry only about
mange mites and/or fleas, but this girl appeared to have neither.

She did have, upon examination, a gap in her spine. Looks like she's been
hit by a car, almost certainly. She's going to get a steroid and some
antibiodics. I won't know for a couple of days whether she's going to make
it, and we may not know for a few months whether her spine will recover
enough that she can be re-released. But I am going to keep in touch with
the person I gave her to at Nebraska Wildlife Rehab.

Thanks for your replies!
