Technically, any mammal can get rabies. However, interestingly, squirrels
(among other rodents) are almost never found to have it. (here's a

To bring this more on-topic - Also, the squirrel in question in this case
was kept secured in a carrier and not even brought inside the house with
the ferrets, and rabies would have to be passed via bite or scratch. But
you are right - rabies is a very serious concern when dealing with wild
animals in the US and other countries where it exists, and it is always
best to be aware of it.
