Subject: Possible Dislocated Elbow

I have a nine week old ferret that started dragging her right front paw
Friday evening. There were no visible signs of trauma, so I waited to see
if it would resolve on it's own. (We have two older ferrets and two ferret
friendly cats, so my original assumption was that she hurt it playing with
them.) There was no improvement by the time I got off work Monday so I
took her to see Dr. YYYYY (Indpls, IN) Tuesday. She did two x-rays and
says she thinks it is dislocated, but she had a hard time reading the x-
rays. She said that we could either leave it alone and risk her loosing
some range of motion in that limb or do surgery to repair it. I have read
that it is possible to set and splint it. As young as she is I really don't
want to do surgery, but will if it is in her best interest. She has been
moving it a little more since being at the Dr. 's yesterday. I am wondering
what the best course of action might be and if there are any alternatives
to pursue that I may not be aware of. If anyone has any advice I would
welcome you to email me at GodessLissa@earthlink.net
Thanks
