I am very sorry about Onion. The answer to your question is, I believe, yes. I've had
two ferrets with adrenal disease where the tumor removed was described as "huge". I
don't remember the actual size, but Podo's was a big one and there was significant
involvement with the vena cava. Our vet was able to ligate the vena cava and get all of
Podo's right adrenal gland out.

It really sounds like Onion had nothing to lose if he went into surgery. I don't know that
he could have been saved, but it never hurts to try when there are no other options. In
Ryo-Ohki's case when our vet saw he couldn't save her we decided simply not to let her
wake up from surgery. She didn't suffer any more, and we knew we had done all we
could for our little girl. Our vet gave Pertwee a 5% chance when he went in for an
exploratory that turned into a nephrectomy. Pertwee is still here, wild and crazy and
bouncy and playful, three years later. I am sure glad that I gave him that chance, even
though I knew the odds were I'd lose him.

I am not second guessing your decision with Onion. I know from your posts you loved
him and did what seemed to be best. Please don't beat yourself up over this.
Sometimes we have to love our ferrets enough to let them go, as hard as that is.

All the best,
Caity and the non-stop nine
