I will start by apologizing for the long post. Thanks for your indulgence.=
I would like to hear from vets that have observed reaction to the subject=
material and if there is a correction for it.I have looked thru the archiv=
es for info on effects of subject item on ferrets. It appears that there i=
s a possibility for some bad reactions. The reason for the interest is I ju=
st lost a 3 yr old female ferret after an appearent successful adrenal surg=
ery. The left adrenal was the only one affected with all other items of in=
terest in excellent shape. Pre op blood was normal except for slight anemi=
a (probably due to adrenal problem). Turbutrol was given post op for pain.=
Ferret (Xena) did not start showing signs of post op recovery as usually =
exhibited. After 5 hrs attempts were made to feed Xena. She did not freel=
y eat and small amounts(about 2-4 cc)of mush/soup were given with a syringe=
. After this she had a normal bowel movement. Continued weakness, lack of a=
ppetite, rapid and shallow breathing was noted. She was taken back to vet =
at this time approx 8 hrs after surgery. Gum and foot pad color ok no blee=
ding from incision noted. Body temp normal, fluids were given and returned=
home. At home two more bowel movements were noted both being more "puddin=
g like" but not diareha. At approx 12 hrs post op extreme weakness noted a=
nd a bloody stool found. Xena was taken to emergency clinic where supporti=
ve measures were given (IV and heating pad). At this time very extreme weak=
ness was exhibited with some wimpering noted. During the remainder of the =
nite, Xena had one more bloody diareha but appeared to gain some strength a=
lthoug her body temp dropped to approx 97. At approx 5 am Xena passed away=
. A post-mortem is to be performed today and I will post the results. This=
is not the first time I have seen this type of reaction in the post op tim=
e frame but it is the first death. I do have several kids (about 20 at thi=
s time) as I do rescue unwanted kids.Again I apologize for the size of this=
post.Dave Adams and the bunch
