Since no one replied, I thought I would reply to myself. The vet doing
Merrick's osteoma surgery next week has not seen him. I sent his
records and x-rays. I emailed her about his cough and here is her
response.....

"I'd suggest we do a heartworm test before we put him under, just to be
on the safe side. A cough due to cardiomyopathy is usually pretty
consistent, not intermittent as you describe."

Now, that's a scary thought. I never thought of heartworms. I do treat
mine monthly but have only had Merrick about a month. I suppose he
could have come with heartworms.
