Subject: Why pred and not proglycem as a first treatment option for insulinoma?

Hi
I'm writing this for a friend. Her ferret has insulinoma, has just been in
for the second insulinoma surgery but no nodules were seen so there must be
microscopic nodules lowering the blood glucose. So the ferret needs to be
put on medication. I know that prednisolone is given first and when it no
longer works well, even after upping and upping the dose, you then add
proglycem. The problem is that my friend's vet insists on putting the
ferret on proglycem and not pred. He says that proglycem has less side
effects. But I have read that proglycem can cause nausea and vomiting and
doesn't work well all on it's own? I just wondered if people could reply
about this problem so I can forward the e-mails to my friend and she can
give them to her vet? If folks/ vets could please confirm that pred is
given as a first option and why or whether proglycem is okay to be given by
itself or which medication has the worse side effects in ferrets? Any info
that could be helpful for my friend's vet. I've already given her links to
Dr Williams' web page and also Mike Janke's one.
