i just noticed a diagnosis tree on dermatology on pages 116 and 117 of Hillyer and Quesenberry's vet text and for hyperkeratosis or excoriations it calls for a skin scraping. If parasites then treat accordingly depending on type found, if no parasites then do skin/hair mycotic culture and sensitivity and consider treatment with ivermectin.
(Of course, that would be it is keratosis and if there isn't a newer or more effective approach.)
