Absolutely possible and very likely. I've heard this story many times. Baby ferrets being introduced into a current ferret household seems to be a somewhat common source of ECE infection. Handling them and then coming home and handling yours without showering and a clothes change has the same effect.

Yes, you can notify the pet store, however, they probably won't do much about it. And really, there's probably not much they can do about it, short of never carrying baby ferrets again, which is unlikely. They could put signs up not to handle the ferrets because of the possibility of infection and warn potential buyers that already have ferrets at home, but that would cut into their profits and I doubt they'd be willing to do that. It sure wouldn't hurt to try.

Is it possible that we (my family) could have "brought it home" from handling the ferrets at our local pet store?
