Dr. William has been unable to be on-line much recently largely due to work demands. May I suggest that you ask again with a subject line that is more inclusive -- maybe something like: "kidneys different sizes; help needed". That may increase the chances of getting a reply.
I know that in humans kidneys have a huge range of variations in presentation. I do NOT know if this is the case for ferrets.
I think that I also recall reading not only of enlarged kidneys but of ones reduced in size by problems in the past FHLs. Have you tried the archives at
http://fhl.sonic-weasel.org/ ? I will try to get time to search there for you but can't promise that I will be able to fit it into my schedule so...
Hydronephrosis has been reported in ferrets. Two cases in the literature involve the accidental ligation of a ureter when a femal was spayed, but I seem to recall the vets here discussing one secondary to blockage from a different cause (infection? prostate inflammation?). Yearts ago someone I knew had a ferret who was born without a ureter, causing it.
Well, I got worried enough about you that I did a partial search. One of these may be helpful for you. I really do NOT know but hope so:
