ECE itself causes the ferret to stop eating as well, when ferrets stop
eating
they get a fatty liver ( form of hepatitis) their liver enzymes (
ALT/AST) can be sky high,
but anything that causes them to stop eating can cause this change in the
liver test. There is no test for ECE, although Dr. WIlliams was working
on one I believe, if you read the info at his site it is so complete and
if you
look around the rest of his site you will find a lot of info on ferrets
geared
for vets- I think you will find it very helpful.

ECE is generally diagnosed by symptoms, history that is compatable with
ECE,etc
