My vet always has me give amoxy and carafate or Pepto post op for at least a week on any major surgery.
The reason for the antibiotic is not to prevent infection, though, but to prevent helicobactor and/or ulcers. In the past, he had problems with ferrets having problems with this post op, and so he now recommends taking preventative measures.
