Dear Stacy:

Has your vet considered the very strong possibility of adrenal disease being at the root of his problem - often the "abscess" that you see near the bladder is due to prostatic disease, arising from the high levels of estrogen in these animals. The swollen prostate (which may have multiple cysts and/or abscesses in it) compresses the urethra, suggesting a blockage. However, draining of one abscess, without addressing the adrenal disease, will ultimately result in re-blockage.

Another possibility that may be contributing to the problem, is the fact that the abscess ruptured - there may also be a low grade peritonitis. Antibiotics are good things, but a good abdominal infection may overpower them.

With kindest regards,

Bruce Williams, DVM
