Reducing protein intake to reduce kidney damage is something which some folks here have tackled in the past. If you go to the Complete Archives and look up that, nephritis, Champ, and other key words you may find useful info. You do have a hard balancing job there and I doubt anything is quite optimal.
If the Prednisone is presenting a caution for the kidneys in this particular ferret's case (if I am reading correctly) then it may be that Diazoxide could be used to allow a lowered Pred level. I am unfamiliar with such cautions but have had one with A/V Heart Node Block and insulinoma who was able to have her Pred reduced through the use of Diazoxide. I do NOT know if Diazoxide has and kidney cautions so that would have to be considered, of course.
Please, as you learn new things from this combination, do teach us all.
