Hi. I just joined this group yesterday. I have 5 ferrets one of my 5 is
getting over ECE. He had a short stay at the vets and was brought home with
a antibiotic called Albon. The vet that treated my ferret seemed to know
what she was doing but I would be more comfortable with a vet that is more
experienced with ferrets.I told her about ECE and she said she never heard
of it. So that was a big clue that she does not see alot of ferrets. Plus
the fact that the vets around here will not recommend using Frontline or
Advantage for fleas.I live in Missouri about 100 miles East of St.
Louis. Also, I have to special order ferret food because I cant find any here
and the pet stores only have a small selection to order from. Does Maxximum
Nutrition Kitten, Science Diet Maintanance and Mazuri Ferret Food sound like
a good mix?The vet let me bring Doodle home because she said his stool was
firming up and he was eating and drinking.I asked what she fed him and she
said Science Diet Feline Maintanance. So that is the reason I am thinking
about adding it to the mix. 3 of my ferrets are almost 2 they are male, the
other 2 are a 8 month old female and a 16 week old male.Other than the ECE
they have not had any other health problems (knock on wood). The only reason
I think he got it was because I had recently got the two new ferrets and
didnt seperate them. I think the two new ones were carriers.I made a stupid
mistake of not seperating them until I knew they were ok. I will not be
making that mistake again. It is also about time for vaccinations to be done.
Im hearing alot about reactiions with the distemper vaccination so I would
like to find a ferret vet as soon as possible. Im not comfortable with the
vet I have now giving them their vaccinations. If they have a reaction I
dont know if she would now what to do.I was thinking about printing out up
to date articles all about ferret care, ferret diseases, vaccinations ect.
from ferret vets and giving it to her but Im afraid I might offend her.If
she would accept them and learn more about ferrets I would feel more
comfortable with her and let her continue to see them but like I said Im
afraid I might offend her. Do vets take refresher courses? It seems like
they would since new diseases come up and better treatments.Just thinking
out loud. If anyone can help please let me know.
Thanks
