Twice, recently, I have seen mention of anesthetizing ferrets to inject
microchips. That's absolutely unnecessary. Every one of my ferrets is
microchipped and none has ever had to be put under for it. I have been
present for most of them and they don't even flinch, even though it's big.

I have mine done for $17 each at a low cost animal aid clinic. My vet charges
$34. Both use AVID. There is also another company now, called AKC
Companion Animal Recovery. Those microchips can be read with the universal
scanners, just like AVID. Two of mine were microchipped with AKC without my
realizing it. I had my vet check them with the scanner to be sure.

I too agree that microchipping is an excellent idea. In addition to the obvious
use, my vet uses the scanner, when I leave several ferrets for the day, to tell
them apart. If anything happens to me, it will be helpful sorting them out also,
since I don't think anyone else could do it.
