Just wanted to give my 2 cent on this.
We have 4 ferrets in Denmark, which all have ID chips. However here they uses
the same chips as in cats and dogs.
Our 4 ferret was chipped by a vet. student, who just happened to have the chip
inserter and some chips with her. We just put them in a towel and got them
chipped right there. Toke less then 1 min for each and we only have to pay for
the chips (around $10 each).
So they don't have to get anesthetized, if your vet is used to handling ferrets.
