A number of vets seem to be away at conferences, on vacation, or
incredibly busy filling in for the ones who are away.

A note: In Dr. Karen Purcell's book _Essentials of Ferrets, a Guide
to Practitioners_ on pages 24 and 25:
"Chloramphenicol
50 mg/kg q 12 h PO
(palmitate)
30-50 mg/kg q 12h SC, IM, IV
(succinate)
Chloramphenicol palmitate may be unavailable in some areas.
Chloramphenicol is the treatment of choice for prliferative bowel
disease. Use for a minimum of 14 days. Advise owner of potential
human toxicities from contact."

Dr. Ruth Heller had time for just a quick note so I got this
privately and will be trying to call peoples' attention to it so if
you know someone here who asked about these things let them know,
please:

Hi, Sukie - I haven't had a chance to do more than skim the posts,
and got your email at the same time as I got the rest. As far as
proliferative colitis, the med I've had most luck with has been
chloramphenicol, but I don't have the dose handy. This one - I see
blood sugars being run, but no mention of other bloodwork. If the
rest of the bloodwork has been fine, with some response to the
Baytril being noted since it was started, I think I'd probably wait
another day or two before pushing further on. The other thing to do
is ask for a second opinion on the pathology results for the biopsy.

Psudomonas is a tough bug to hit, and if they've been treating long
term with an antibiotic that it's resistant to, it makes sense that
it's going to be a very well established infection and that can take
a very, very long time to get.

Ruth
