First off, have his ears checked again, including for a possible fungal infection, and other causes.
Secondly, can you ferret-proof a room well enough that he can be in and out of his cage at least 6 hours a day as he chooses? He sounds like he may be feeling insecure and lonely, and seeking companionship and a chance to learn his new surroundings. Does he have less companionship than he had in the dorm where the rooms was possibly used more often by people?
