Sunni, if you go to
http://fhl.sonic-weasel.org/
which has the COMPLETE FHL ARCHIVES and use the search engine you will find a number of posts on pet insurance and ferrets.
If you put in "insurance" you'll get 60 posts, some of which have your answers.
For example, here is the most recent post on the topic:
http://fhl.sonic-weasel.org/browse.php?msg=SG3575
Experiences are going to vary a lot with shelter ferrets depending on the ferret, its past, and the shelter. We've never brought any diseases home from our local shelters but we have (purposely) brought home ones with health problems or behavioral problems because or their needs and our mutual bonding.
I think that you should check into your local shelters with a range of people or if you share a vet ask the vet. Be careful to not go for just the opinions of one clique since that may mislead you in either direction.
Some of the rescues I have heard about have died young, many at normal age, and even a few at age 10 and older.
