Dear Dawn:

I would very much like to see that smear. Hemobartonella has not been previously reported in ferrets. Hemobartonella-like parasites have been reported in several types of monkeys, but it is mainly a parasite of cats.

While I am not averse to saying it would be a new one on me, I think that I would want to have that diagnosis confirmed by a local lab before saying this is the first case ever...

With kindest regards,

Bruce Williams, DVM
